BYU football: Get to know the Wisconsin Badgers
The Badgers have allowed just 24 points on the season. Who are some of Wisconsin’s defensive players to watch?
Noah Seligman: The Wisconsin defense has been one of the better defenses in the country the last several years. That’s especially impressive considering Wisconsin has cycled through quite a few coordinators in the last few years.
Nonetheless, the Badger defense just keeps on humming. Thus far, 24 points in two games is great. If you keep up a 12 points per game allowed average, you’re going to win quite a bit. The qualifier there is that the Badgers two opponents thus far combined to go 6-18 last season. So maybe the quality of the opposition (or lack thereof) inflates the defensive numbers a bit. Of note, 14 of those 24 points allowed came following a Wisconsin turnover in its own half of the field. So the numbers could be even better if the offense hadn’t put the defense in a bad spot.
In terms of players to know, the main guy is thumping inside linebacker TJ Edwards. He led the Badgers in tackles last season and is especially strong in pass coverage. Nick Nelson is a physical corner who transferred to Wisconsin from Hawaii. Leon Jacobs is a missile in the linebacker group who is always around the football.
