BYU football: The Cougars may be close to an offensive breakthrough
By Adam Gibby
Despite having a rough offensive performance against Utah, BYU football may have found how to have success for the rest of the season.
Last Saturday, BYU football only had 233 yards of offense against Utah. By looking at those numbers, one could easily believe that there were no positive takeaways from the game. Despite the low numbers however, I really believe that the Cougars may have found out how to successful offensively for the rest of the season.
There are many areas that the Cougars are going to have to work on. However, if they can get these three areas down, the Cougars will find themselves scoring a lot more points.
Give the ball to No. 5
Ula Tolutau may be a player who BYU fans had never heard of before Saturday. With Squally Canada fading and Kavika Fonua not able to get much done offensively, Tolutau was put into the game in the third quarter after a fumble recovery inside the 25-yard line. There was an immediate difference once he entered the game. In fact, Tolutau was able to gain every single yard for the Cougars in their first scoring drive. Tolutau was not needed much more after that drive, as the Cougars were forced into a two minute offense playing style.
Tolutau is about as big as a fullback. He is the kind of runner that can wear down a defense if given enough carries. Mix in Fonua or Canada for outside runs and quick inside runs and the Cougars suddenly may have a running game.
