BYU football: Three reasons this is the perfect time for a bye
Beau Hoge gets extra reps
The coaching staff had already said Hoge didn’t get too much work in at practice. That makes sense, but it also showed last week against the Badgers.
With the bye, Hoge has an extra week to study the playbook, get in work with receivers and learn the offense more – even if it isn’t in a full-on practice.

Having the extra time might allow for more Hoge-centric additions to the playbook. I wouldn’t mind seeing a few run-pass option plays added – it might help the Cougars crack the occasional big play.
Again, I think Hoge will be a fine backup. He’s got the arm strength to make some good throws and he’s mobile/shifty/agile. All he needs to do is realize that you can live to play another down. Not every snap has to be a positive play. Sometimes, all you need to do is avoid a negative one (like that ridiculous safety).
