No. 2: History and trends

BYU football is 31-5 against Utah State since 1975. The last loss to the Aggies in Logan came in 2010.

The similarity between 2010 and 2017?

A struggling offense.

Through the first five games of 2010, BYU was averaging 15.2 points per game, 192 passing yards per game, 119 rushing yards per game and were 1-4.

In 2017 – through four games – the Cougars are averaging 9.8 points per game, 144 passing yards per game, 77 rushing yards per game and stand at 1-3.

While BYU football has been on a dominant run over Utah State over the last 30+ years, the troubling trend is the anemic offense. Will the defense force USU into third and long situations? Sure. Will it keep points off the board? Sure. Can it overcome momentum, playing on the road and the rivalry emotions for the entirety of the game? I’m not entirely sure.

In the past, it would really have mattered, because the Cougars had more firepower on offense. But this year, we can’t be so sure.
