Many, if not most fans, have already given up on BYU football this season. Taking a closer look however can show why you should still be watching.

Starting 1-3. Losing to Utah for the seventh straight time. Scoring less than 10 points per game. No offense. These are just some of the excuses that BYU fans have given up on the Cougars. There is no sugar coating this, the Cougars have been really hard to watch.

Despite all of this however, there is still reason to watch them.

1. BYU football started 1-3 last year

Before you start saying “Well, BYU football lost those three games by a combined seven points,” hear me out.

Going into the season last year, everyone thought that the schedule was going to be as competitive as this season. UCLA was supposed to be a top 15 team. So were Utah and Michigan State. West Virginia and Arizona were supposed to be also ranked high as well. Yet all of these teams struggled.

If we really look at it, BYU beat a really bad Michigan State and Arizona team and lost to struggling Utah and UCLA. West Virginia was the only team that lived up to their hype.

Yes, losing by a combined 67 points to great teams is worse than losing by seven to mediocre teams, but it isn’t as bad as we think.

Losing 40-6 to potentially a top five Wisconsin team is not THAT much worse than losing 17-14 to a struggling UCLA team. Losing 27-0 to powerhouse LSU is not THAT much worse than losing 35-32 to a decent West Virginia team. And finally, losing 19-13 to rival Utah is not THAT much worse than losing 20-19 to Utah last year.

Again, yes I realize that each of those losses was worse than last year’s losses, but I just don’t think it’s definitively that much worse.
