BYU football lost the Utah State Aggies, 40-24. They committed seven turnovers, most of them after QB Beau Hoge was knocked out of the game.
As soon as BYU football QB Beau Hoge hit the ground, his body went stock still. It was instantly apparent that he was down for the count.
That added another name to the streak of QBs broken against the Utah State Aggies.
And as with Hoge, so with BYU.
After a terrible start on both sides of the ball, the Cougars flipped a switch, scoring on defense a la pick six from Micah Hannemann, and then on a tricky double pass to fullback Brayden El-Bakri.
The Cougar defense stuffed the Aggies on three straight tackles for loss, including a sack. The offense followed with a flying, one-foot-tag 40-yard touchdown courtesy of Beau Tanner to go up 21-7.
It looked like the Cougars would roll.
Then the Aggies snagged a pick six off a helmet bounce. On the next BYU possession, Hoge pulled the ball out of the belly of his running back, and cut up field for a good gain.
And a defender smashed him senseless, face down.
What followed was a Shakespearean tragedy of turnovers. Good runs by Ula Tolutau ended in fumbles, and Koy Detmer Jr. threw interceptions like he was Oprah handing out cars. Two were pick sixes, for x2 damage. A drive with Austin Kafentzis behind center running a triple option also saw brief success before coughing up the ball.
The defense just couldn’t keep saving them.
Now the Cougars are riddled by doubt on offense, and with injury at QB. Boise State and Mississippi State won’t be easier to beat than the Aggies. So where does BYU football go from here?
Probably places they haven’t seen since Gary Crowton.
Just gotta weather the storm.
Is basketball season here yet?
