BYU football: For the third time, Cougars re-tooling offense for new QB

BYU football was defeated by Utah State last week, but the biggest loss may have been Beau Hoge going down with a head injury. Now what for BYU?

It would appear that, for the third time in as many weeks, BYU football will have to re-tool, reinvent and simplify its offense for a new quarterback.

At this point, for better or worse, that quarterback looks like Koy Detmer Jr.

Detmer Jr. completed just seven passes in 20 attempts against Utah State, throwing for 93 yards and a trio of interceptions.

It was ugly. Brutal, really.

What’s worse, is that it doesn’t look like it’s getting better anytime soon.

Boise State comes to Provo next. At a time when a large portion of BYU football’s fanbase is entirely disinterested, it’s tough to think that LaVell Edwards Stadium will be the intimidating venue it typically is.

Add the fact that the Broncos are coming off a bye week and seeking redemption for a blowout loss to Virginia.

Next: Don't Give Up On The Cougars

Granted, Boise State isn’t the powerhouse it typically is. However, the Broncos are still a very strong team. They defeated Troy (who just beat LSU in Death Valley) and lost to Washington State by just three points on the road.

The point is, this isn’t the week you want to be going back to the drawing board. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what BYU football is doing.

While I believe that Joe Critchlow and Kody Wilstead are much better options at quarterback, there’s no way of knowing who the Cougars are leaning on until they release a projected depth chart for the week.

Even with Critchlow and Wilstead being more talented than Detmer Jr., it’s not like they have much experience – so it’s tough to throw them to the wolves against Boise State.

At the same time, getting them reps now, regardless of the outcome, may be a positive thing. Because at this point, it looks like BYU football will be 1-6 before the schedule gets lighter.

So what do you have to lose?
