BYU basketball picked up a talented scoring guard today, with the commitment of Hunter Erickson from Timpview High School (UT).

BYU basketball has its first 2018 commitment.

Timpview High School (UT) guard Hunter Erickson has committed to Dave Rose and the Cougars. Erickson chose Provo over offers from Utah, UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Erickson averaged 22 points per game last season at Timpview. According to 247Sports, Erickson is the No. 5 player in the state.

Erickson announced his commitment via Twitter on Wednesday morning.

Watching his film, it’s pretty clear to see that Erickson is a top-notch athlete. Over the summer, Erickson played against Bol Bol. Bol Bol is the son of Manute Bol, and is a consensus top five prospect. He stands 7-foot-2.

And Erickson dunked over him.

Don’t believe it? Check out the clip in the video below.

In addition to being a pretty stellar athlete who can drive around defenders, Erickson is a versatile scorer who can knock down 3-pointers with his smooth shot.

He led the Timpview Thunderbirds to an 18-5 record last season.

Obviously, it’s a great thing to get athletes of this caliber. If there’s been any sort of knock on BYU basketball in recent years it was that the Cougars didn’t often have the athletes necessary to compete with some teams.

Dave Rose even eluded to this last year during the West Coast Conference Tournament.

With players like Erickson coming, Rose might not be saying that for much longer.

Erickson will likely make it official in November, when the early signing period begins. He’s also gearing up for his senior season with the Thunderbirds, who are hoping to avenge a buzzer-beating loss in 4A state tournament last year.

Congratulations to Erickson, and we’re sure Cougar Nation can’t wait for him to join BYU basketball.
