BYU football: Three things to know for the Boise State Broncos
After losing to Utah State, BYU football returns to Provo to host the Boise State Broncos on Friday. Here’s what you need to know.
BYU football is desperate for a win. Can it come on Friday over the Boise State Broncos?
Well, maybe.
Granted, the odds aren’t great. But the Cougars are a different team at LaVell Edwards Stadium and Boise State isn’t the defensive powerhouse its been in recent years.
Knowing a loss is likely looming against Mississippi State next week, getting a win over the Broncos would be huge for a reeling BYU football team.
Here’s what you need to know for Cougars vs Broncos, 2017 edition.
A dual-quarterback system
Boise State uses two quarterbacks, each of which brings something unique.
Junior Brett Rypien is a more traditional pocket passer. He missed the second half of Boise State’s game against Washington State, and the following game due to injury. So while his statistics aren’t jaw-dropping, there’s a good reason for it.
Currently, Rypien has completed 44-of-73 passes for 521 yards. He’s yet to throw a touchdown, but has two interceptions. Last season against BYU football, Rypien threw for 442 yards and three touchdowns (with two interceptions).
The second Broncos quarterback is senior Montell Cozart. Cozart is a much more dynamic runner, but has a solid arm, too.
Cozart has run for 191 yards this season (which leads the Broncos), in addition to throwing 416 yards and six touchdowns. Considering how the Cougars struggled with Kent Myers’ mobility, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Boise State use plenty of Cozart.
