BYU basketball might be taking on New Mexico next week in an exhibition game to raise money for hurricane relief, per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

While we weren’t expecting to see BYU basketball playing a game until November, it appears that we might get our first look at the Cougars on October 27.

According to a report from CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, BYU and New Mexico will play an exhibition contest next Friday to help raise money for hurricane relief.

Both BYU and New Mexico are waiting for the NCAA to grant them a waiver to play, but it appears likely to happen.

Rothstein is also reporting that Niagra and Robert Morris are seeking a waiver to play an exhibition for the same cause.

BYU basketball will travel to New Mexico for the contest, but we don’t know the  tip-off time at this point. Also, it’s unlikely that the games will air on major networks.

But, the beauty of BYU is having a television network at its disposal. There’s a chance the NCAA won’t allow BYUtv to air the game, in which case I fully expect the two schools to live stream it on their websites or via Periscope.

Ultimately, it’s pretty cool to see some schools around the nation get together to help out a great cause. Outside of assisting those who need it most, it gives BYU basketball fans an early preview of the team – which is always a fun thing.

Last year, the Lobos went 17-14 overall (10-8 in Mountain West play). Obviously there’s a connection between BYU and UNM from their Mountain West days – when New Mexico’s “The Pit” was as hostile an environment as any for the Cougars.

Now, we’re just waiting on the NCAA to make the game official.
