Outside of BYU football, Cougar sports are doing extremely well
By Adam Gibby
We all know how BYU football is struggling, but do we realize how good other BYU sports are doing?
At the beginning of the Fall sports season all of the hype was around BYU football. Football dominates fall sports as we all know.
There has always been support for other teams, but after women’s soccer started 2-4-3 almost all of the support and hope was lost.
Cross country was never on the map and women’s volleyball was once again really good, but did not turn any heads because of a lack of good opponents.
Time to look again.
Women’s Soccer
After only scoring four goals in the first seven games of the season, the BYU women’s soccer team has figured out how to find the back of the net and win games.
In the last seven games, the Cougars have scored 17 goals while only allowing seven goals to be scored on them. In that same time span the Cougars have gone 5-2 and have won four of their last five games. Although they will probably not finished the season ranked in the top ten, they have figured out how to win games and they are a really fun team to watch.

They have a really good chance of winning the WCC conference championship which would guarantee them another trip to the NCAA tournament.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
The men’s cross country team is doing extremely well. In the Bill Dellinger Invitational which was hosted by the University of Oregon, the men finished first, second, third, fourth, seventh and eighth place overall to finish with an overall score of 17 points.
The next best team was Stanford who finished with 73 points. Currently the Cougars are ranked No. 2 in the country only behind Northern Arizona. The craziest statistic however, is that out of BYU’s top five runners, zero of them are seniors.
On the women’s side, they finished third in the Bill Dellinger Invitational. They are currently ranked No. 16 in the nation. There has been improvement for the women’s team and many believe they could finish in the top ten.
Women’s Volleyball
The BYU women’s volleyball team almost has a perfect record. With wins over No. 21 Ohio State and No. 16 Utah, the Cougars are looking like a real contender for the National Championship.
Their lone loss this season came to Baylor in a tournament that was held in Honolulu. Overall the Cougars are 19-1 and win by an average score of 3 sets to 0.65. The Cougars are ranked No. 17 in the nation, however they are currently one of only three schools in the country with only one loss.
So before we start to think that BYU sports are doing terrible, we should step back and look at the overall picture. Yes, football brings in the most most money and viewership. Despite this however, the other teams are doing an amazing job and should be recognized for it.
