BYU basketball had a pair of sophomores named to the preseason All-West Coast Conference team, as voted on by the league’s coaches.

BYU basketball’s TJ Haws and Yoeli Childs were both named to the preseason All-West Coast Conference team on Thursday.

The announcement comes in the midst of the league’s media days, which are taking place in Las Vegas.

Haws and Childs join San Francisco’s Charles Minland as the only underclassmen on the team.

Last season, Haws was a member of the All-WCC first team – the first Cougar freshman to make an All-Conference first team since Danny Ainge. He averaged 13.8 points per game and 3.2 assists per game. Haws is also a member of the Jerry West Award watchlist.

Childs, meanwhile, averaged 9.3 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game, along with nearly 1.5 blocks.

The rest of the team is as follows:

St. Mary’s Gaels – Calvin Hermanson (senior forward), Jock Landale (senior center), Emmett Narr (senior guard).

Gonzaga Bulldogs – Johnathan Williams (senior forward), Josh Perkins (senior guard).

San Francisco Dons – Charles Minland (sophomore forward).

Santa Clara Broncos – KJ Feagin (junior guard).

San Diego Toreros – Olin Carter III (junior guard).

The WCC also announced the results of its preseason coaches poll. St. Mary’s was picked to win the league – nearly unanimously – with Gonzaga and BYU selected to finish second and third.

Hard to argue with any of the results here. BYU basketball will have an uphill battle to knock off the Bulldogs and Gaels.

The only thing I hope is that Nick Emery uses his down year, and subsequent snubbing here, as motivation for this season. Emery, if he can become more consistent, could be a huge piece for BYU basketball this season.

Here’s hoping that Haws and Childs can remain healthy and prove the WCC coaches right.
