BYU football: Defensive back Troy Warner may be done for the year
If BYU football’s loss to East Carolina wasn’t bad enough by itself, there’s a real chance that starting defensive back Troy Warner might be done for the year.
BYU football’s been bit by the injury bug. Again.
At this point, we should probably just use a carbon copy and leave a blank space where we can insert the player’s name.
It’s been that kind of year for BYU football.
This time, it’s starting cornerback Troy Warner.
Warner wasn’t listed on the team’s two-deep depth chart on Monday, and his brother Fred told reporters that the defensive back might have played his last snap in 2017.
Warner left the game against ECU in the first half with a foot injury. After heading to the locker room, he reappeared on the sidelines in street clothes, with crutches and a walking boot.
BYU doesn’t comment on injuries unless they’re season-ending, so there’s a chance we get some clarification on the injury.
However, there were plenty of speculations regarding it. ESPN 960 radio host Ben Criddle said on Twitter it may be a Lisfranc injury, stemming from cleats that were too flexible. Cougar fans of course know plenty about Lisfranc injuries after Taysom Hill suffered one in 2015.
With Warner’s injury, the total of injured Cougars now stands at 35. Thirteen of those players were starters/projected starters.
Chris Wilcox replaced Warner on the depth chart. Wilcox has played pretty well in 2017 – much better than he did in 2016. But I also expect Trevion Greene to see an increase in snaps. Greene was a pretty impressive JUCO get for BYU football, so it’s exciting to think he’ll get some run.
It’s grasping at straws, but if there’s any silver lining here it may be that other players will get some run. That may give the coaching staff an idea of the talent they’ll be working with over the next few seasons.
