BYU basketball: Three takeaways from the Cougar Tipoff
Yoeli Childs is BYU’s best player
I’ve already said he’s going to be BYU basketball’s most important player, and now it looks like the sophomore big man is going to be the Cougars’ best.
Childs led all scorers with 23 points, and thoroughly dominated whoever was thrown at him. Worthington, Dalton Nixon, a combination of the two… it didn’t matter. He hit fadeaways, baby hooks and slammed home alley-oops.
Physically, he was a man among boys, and his athleticism was on full display. Plus, it looks like he’s developed a nifty mid-range jumper. If he can hit that with any consistency whatsoever, it’s game over.
I think Childs is definitely one of the top 10 players in the West Coast Conference, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s closer to the five or six range by season’s end.
If he can stay healthy, I think BYU basketball will feed him just like it did Eric Mika last season, which may mean a monster season for Childs.
