BYU football: Grant Jones becomes 36th Cougar to miss time
BYU football’s team bus might as well be an ambulance at this point. Grant Jones becomes the 36th Cougar to miss significant time this season.
BYU football has been battered, bruised and broken this season.
After linebacker Grant Jones suffered a season-ending injury against San Jose State last week, he officially became the 36th Cougar to miss significant time due to injury.
It’s been a brutal stretch for BYU, especially considering last season the team stayed relatively healthy.
Of course, there’s been plenty of fire surrounding BYU’s strength and conditioning coaches – but the players seem to unanimously approve of Nu’u Tafisi, so I’m quick to dismiss it.

Sitake is firmly in that camp as well, telling the Salt Lake Tribune’s Jay Drew:
“We have the best strength staff, strength coach in country. So, Nu’u Tafisi, I will back him up 100 percent. The guy played at Cal, worked at Boise State. Look at his resume… He went to USC and is doing a great job with our guys right now.”
It’s certainly an unfortunate situation for BYU football, but it seems like it’s more bad luck than anything else. Injuries can happen at every level, and sometimes those injuries happen on fluke plays. So it’s tough to blame a coach that’s had success in other places.
If there’s any silver lining, it may be that some new players will get more chances. Riley Burt and Austin Kafentzis may get more carries – which I think is a good thing. Tre Greene and Chris Wilcox will have more chances to develop. Plus, it gave us a look at Beau Hoge.
Obviously, you’re always hoping for everyone to stay healthy. But you have to play the hand you’re dealt. And that’s exactly what BYU football is trying to do right now.
Here’s hoping the Cougars can kick the injury bug for the rest of the season.
