BYU football: Jamaal Williams scores first career NFL touchdown
BYU football’s all-time leading rusher, Jamaal Williams, found NFL pay dirt for the first time in his career on Monday Night Football against the Detroit Lions.
BYU football fans have seen plenty of Jamaal Williams touchdowns. But for Green Bay Packers fans, it was a new sighting.
After securing a role as Green Bay’s backup running back, Williams (and starter Ty Montgomery) seemingly lost their jobs to rookie Aaron Jones.
But last night, on Monday Night Football, it was J-Swag Daddy – not Jones – who took a goal line carry into the end zone for a score.
You can check out a video of the play below. Love that he’s still churning his legs four yards into the end zone. That’s the kind of tough running that made him a fan favorite in Provo.
Williams hasn’t done much for the Packers this season. He’s taken just 11 carries for 34 yards and one touchdown. He also has four catches for 38 yards.
It’s tough for Williams. After Jones took over as the starter, Montgomery is now the pseudo-No. 2 back. Add that dynamic to an offense that’s missing All-Pro and future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and you’ve got a team that’s struggling to run the ball.
Still, it was nice to see the former BYU football great get some goal line work – even if it came in garbage time.
For a rookie player, every play counts. Whether it happens on an un-timed down in garbage time or not is irrelevant. Williams is trying to carve out a role for himself, so every positive thing helps him do that.
Next up for Green Bay is a divisional matchup with the Chicago Bears. The Bears are allowing an average of 104 rushing yards per game (13th in the league), so running room might be hard to come by.
