BYU Cougars: Fans able to smile after winning weekend
Women’s volleyball vaults to victory
It should come as no surprise by now that No. 9 women’s volleyball has been taking it to their opponents.
Sitting pretty at 25-2 with only three games left in the regular season, the Cougars pummelled Gonzaga and Portland in their own gyms over the weekend. Both teams couldn’t overcome BYU’s combination of McKenna Miller and Veronica Jones-Perry firing at them from the outside hitter spot.
Add to that a fantastic defensive mindset led by sophomore libero Mary Lake, and the Cougars have every chance to make another National Championship run like they had in 2014. That Jennifer Hamson/Alexa Gray-led team had a relentless attack, but I’d say 2017’s back line just might be better.
Of course, the NCAA selection committee seldom sees things that way. The 2014 Cougars were unseeded. Don’t expect any favors for 2017, either, even if BYU cruises through their last three home matches. If they win the big enchilada, they’ll have to do it the hard way.
Extra points
More good news: men’s and women’s cross country both qualified for Nationals. The men are ranked No. 2 and look poised to make some NCAA noise.
Oh, and Jimmer is still killing it in China:
Whatever sport you’re a fan of, if they wore the stretch Y on their uniform, you had a good weekend. With the last embers of football and volleyball left to burn and basketball just heating up, there’s still time to enjoy the most magically sportiest time of the year.
Nobody is throwing up a banner just yet, but it was worth a good grin.
