BYU football finished the 2017 season scoring less than 17 points per game, change had to be made. But with Ty Detmer out, what’s next?

On Monday, November 27, Ty Detmer was fired from his role of offensive coordinator for the BYU football team.

So what now? Although the offense was hired primarily by Kalani Sitake, the offensive coordinator has a lot of say on who he wants. Does this mean that a new coordinator could come in and fire everyone else on the offensive staff?

Yes, probably.

Although there are a lot of different possibilities of what will happen, here are the three most likely situations.

BYU finds an outsider and keeps most of the current staff

It is no secret that for the most part, the offense was a disaster this season. There was no single offensive unit that seemed to be a bright spot. Perhaps if the running backs had a great season, or if the offensive line had not have allowed 28 sacks then there could be a valid argument for Tom Holmoe and Coach Sitake to promote one of the current coaches to offensive coordinator.

Again however, no coach really performed extremely well to seem worthy for that promotion. For that reason, the most likely scenario is for BYU to hire someone new. Someone who is not currently with the Cougars and also does not have a lot of influence. This means that the new coordinator will not be likely to bring in other coaches with him.

Also, some of BYU’s institutional policies make things tricky.

Some names in this category to consider:

Jason Beck – Currently Jason Beck is the quarterbacks coach for the Virginia Cavaliers under Coach Bronco Mendenhall. Although he does not have experience as an offensive coordinator, a promotion to offensive coordinator for the school he once played for could be interesting to him, however would be a risk for BYU football.

Gary Crowton – Yes, the coach that BYU football fired over a decade ago. At first this would seem as  going backwards, however, honestly, Crowton is not a terrible coach. He recruited players like John Beck, Jonny Harline and Harvey Unga. Crowton though was fired before they ever had the chance to play.  Crowton currently is the offensive coordinator for Stephen F. Austin, so it is not out of the realm of possibilities that Crowton would accept an invitation back to the Cougars sidelines.

Chad Lewis (aka Ty Detmer 2.0) – Although he has never coached, Lewis is the current assistant athletic director for BYU. He is a proven leader and motivator giving devotionals and speeches around the country. However he would bring even more questions of credibility than Ty Detmer did when he was first hired.
