BYU football: Zadock Dinkelmann decommits from Cougars
When BYU football relieved Ty Detmer of his OC duties, there was a risk of losing quarterback prospect Zadock Dinkelmann. That’s now come to pass.
BYU football has lost a commitment from three-star quarterback prospect, and Ty Detmer’s nephew, Zadock Dinkelmann.
Dinkelmann made his announcement via Twitter.
The news isn’t really surprising. As soon as BYU football moved on from Ty Detmer as offensive coordinator, most figured that Dinkelmann might not be taking his talents to Provo. The former LSU commit has other options on the table, but there haven’t been any reports regarding the programs Dinkelmann is currently interested in.
It’s never fun to lose a commit, but there was an awful lot of “quarterback of the future” talk among BYU football fans regarding Dinkelmann. He very well may have developed into a stud, but we’ve seen two quarterbacks perform well under expectations with Detmer.
But most importantly it’s essential that a high school kid chooses the program he feels most comfortable in. All too often we forget these are 18-year-olds with their entire lives ahead of them.
Perhaps reading the writing on the wall, BYU football offered Boise State commit Zachary Wilson last week. And of course the Cougars are still in the running for five-star quarterback Tanner McKee.
It also wouldn’t be shocking to see BYU football scour the JUCO ranks for a quarterback. The Cougars need someone with experience to compete for the job. Not to say that Tanner Mangum, Beau Hoge or Joe Critchlow can’t turn things around – but the Cougars need another option.
These next few months will be hugely important for BYU football. The team needs to find an OC that will develop an identity, sell kids on it and hopefully sign a nice class in February.
