BYU football: Cougars flip three-star QB Stacy Conner
BYU football may have just flipped its quarterback of the future. Late Saturday night news broke that three-star QB Stacy Conner flipped from UNLV to BYU.
For as bad as 2017 was for BYU football, things are already looking better for 2018.
Stacy Conner, a three-star quarterback from Wylie High School (Texas), has flipped his commitment to BYU football from UNLV, according to reports.
Comparing Twitter time stamps, it appears that Michael Florek was the first to report the news.
According to 247Sports, Conner had offers on the table from UConn, Memphis and Nevada – among others. This season for Wylie High School he’s thrown for 1,009 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 167 yards and four scores.
On Film
If there’s one thing that jumps out at you while watching his film, it’s his arm strength. On the run, off his back foot… it doesn’t seem to matter. Conner has a cannon. You can check out some of his highlights below, and can see a near-10 minute highlight reel on his Hudl page.
Conner also has great size and a frame that can be built on. He looks every bit of his listed height (6-foot-5) and currently weighs in at 190 lbs. He’s a good athlete and mobile, but doesn’t appear to be a threat to break off long runs. Think more Cam Newton (big arm, big size, goal-line wrecking crew) than Russell Wilson.
Conner told Scout.com that he thinks his game is similar to that of Jameis Winston or Deshaun Watson.
Conner visited BYU this weekend and decommitted (and subsequently committed to BYU football) just a day later. Micah Simon – a former teammate of Conner – hosted the quarterback on his official visit and is said to be a big reason for his commitment.
Conner will enroll at BYU in January, meaning he’ll be with BYU football for the majority of offseason conditioning and spring camp.
It’s obviously really early to make a call, but I fully expect Conner to get his fair shake at the starting quarterback job for the Cougars. Doesn’t mean he’ll win it, but I’d be pretty surprised if he doesn’t see the field in some capacity in 2018.
