According to reports, BYU football has found its new offensive coordinator, hiring LSU’s Jeff Grimes.

Jeff Grimes is coming to BYU football, according to reports.

News first surfaced of the hire on Wednesday night on Twitter. Football Scoop first reported the hire, with LSU beat writers reporting it shortly thereafter.

Grimes has been with the Tigers since 2014, coaching LSU’s offensive line. He also served as the Tigers’ run game coordinator.

Entering the 2017 season, Grimes had coached 37 total games for the Tigers. In 29 of those games, LSU had at least one player rush for at least 100 yards.

Grimes has also had three linemen selected in the NFL Draft, to go with seven All-SEC players and three All-Americans.

In short, Grimes has been successful in the most competitive football conference in the nation.

In addition to coaching at LSU, Grimes has also coached at Virginia Tech, Auburn, Colorado, Arizona State, Boise State and BYU.

So while Grimes doesn’t have much experience calling a game, he’s got a ton of Division-I collegiate experience. He’s coached successfully all around the nation.

In terms of what this means for the rest of the offensive staff, it’s anyone’s guess. I’ve heard Grimes has a good relationship with both Mike Empey and Ty Detmer, so they might remain with BYU football. Steve Clark did a solid job as tight ends coach, coaching Matt Bushman to the USA Today Sports Freshman All-America team, but there’s no telling if Grimes has a guy in mind.

Ben Cahoon and Reno Mahe are probably gone. One would assume Grimes has connections elsewhere and we know he’s been given autonomy regarding his staff.

In terms of what the offense will look like, one would think it would look pretty similar to what the Tigers are running – which means a pro-style offense.

Overall, this is a big get for BYU football. Grabbing a coach with legitimate SEC success and experience is huge. It shows BYU is letting Kalani Sitake go to work and get his guys.
