BYU football: Who stays and who goes under new OC Jeff Grimes?
BYU football hired former LSU offensive line coach and running game coordinator Jeff Grimes as its new offensive coordinator. Are other dominoes about to fall?
BYU football has secured its new offensive coordinator, replacing Ty Detmer with Jeff Grimes. The hire is a good one for a program coming off a horrendous 4-9 season.
While Grimes will remain with the LSU Tigers for their Citrus Bowl matchup against Notre Dame on Jan. 1, 2018, he’s likely already making calls and trying to assemble his new staff.
Will any members of the current staff be retained by Grimes and BYU football? We go position-by-position to give a prediction on each coaching spot.
Quarterbacks Coach: Ty Detmer
Ty Detmer doubled as both offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the last two seasons with BYU football. While his experiment as an OC was a failure, no one can deny Detmer has a mind for football and a vast knowledge of the sport. There’s no telling if Detmer would even want to remain on the staff, but one would imagine he would if there was an offer. As a position group coach, a lot of the pressure would be removed from Detmer’s shoulders, which might improve everyone’s performances.
Prediction: Out
I think Grimes, as a first-time offensive coordinator, is going to be looking for guys with play calling experience to add to his staff. I know Detmer has two years of that experience – and that he ran an offense similar to LSU’s – but I’m not sure how much experience is worth when the results aren’t there.
But, full disclosure, this is the pick I’m least confident about. It wouldn’t surprise me at all for Detmer to at least be offered the position.
There have been an number of rumors that Snow College head coach Paul Peterson might be in line for the quarterbacks coach job. That would be a slam dunk hire for BYU football should it happen.
