BYU basketball: Kyle Collinsworth signs two-way deal with Dallas Mavericks
BYU basketball’s triple-double king Kyle Collinsworth has inked a two-way deal with the Dallas Mavericks.
For Kyle Collinsworth, it’s been a while. It’s been a while since he was tearing up opponents with BYU basketball. A while since he set the NCAA record for career triple-doubles.
But Collinsworth, who has been in the NBA G-League, kept working. And now he’s reached his goal by signing a two-way deal with the Dallas Mavericks.
Collinsworth has been tearing up the G-League, so the contract is certainly well deserved. On the year, he was averaging 11.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game with the Texas Legends.
As a signee of a two-way deal, Collinsworth can only spend 45 days with the Dallas Mavericks this season. So his run will be fairly limited, but he should get enough chances to prove himself in the NBA.
Two-way NBA/G-League players are paid a daily amount, corresponding to the number of days spent in the NBA.
Collinsworth brings a unique skill set to the table for the Mavericks, who are floundering this season with a record of 8-23 (15th in the Western Conference). He should be able to make some sort of impact on the offensive end.
Through his 18 G-League games this season, Collinsworth has taken nearly 70 percent of his shots from within three feet of the basket, giving up mid-range and 3-point shooting.
On those attempts, he’s shooting 61 percent.
It looks like he’s attempting to emphasize his strengths. He’s not a good shooter, he’s not a great defender. But he’s an above average rebounder, a good passer and he’s really good around the basket.
We’ll continue to track the former BYU basketball star’s progress with the Mavs as the season rolls along.
