BYU football: Based on Early Signing Day, Tanner McKee likely isn’t coming to Provo

Nothing is set in stone, but don’t wait around hoping for Tanner McKee to join BYU football. Especially after the Cougars signed two quarterbacks.

BYU football’s quarterback situation is a jumbled mess at the moment. The Cougars have question marks surrounding the players on the roster and then signed two talented QBs, then added another back from his LDS mission.

As it stands, the Cougars have Tanner Mangum, Beau Hoge, Kody Wilstead, Joe Critchlow and Koy Detmer Jr. on the roster.

Then, BYU football signed two-star quarterback Stacy Conner and three-star quarterback Zachary Wilson. Plus, the Cougars welcomed back three-star quarterback Jaren Hall.

So there’s no shortage of signal callers in Provo.

Obviously, there’s no way all of these guys can play at once. Granted, Hoge might not be 100 percent by the time next season starts and Detmer Jr. has no real chance of playing.

But that still leaves you with six players vying for the starting quarterback position.

Even if Conner and Wilson redshirt (which seems unlikely), the Cougars have four guys competing. One would assume that Mangum – despite being terrible – is in the driver’s seat for the starting job. But if I had to put money on someone unseating him, it would be on either Critchlow or Wilson.

BYU football’s pitch to Wilson probably involved early playing time – otherwise, he likely would’ve been headed to Cal or Boise State.

So what does all this mean?

It means that LDS, five-star, blue-chip quarterback prospect Tanner McKee probably isn’t coming to Provo.

McKee to BYU football was a longshot anyway, but there’s no reason for him to sign with a team that already has a seven-way competition going for quarterback. One would have to assume that the Cougars started pressing Wilson once they felt McKee wasn’t happening anyway.

BYU football needs to start getting the top-end LDS prospects. So in that aspect, it’s disappointing to think a mission-first LDS player might overlook the Cougars. However, there are still plenty of prospects out there for the Cougars to nab. Perhaps the most important at the moment is wide receiver Gunner Romney.

Romney is currently committed to the Cougars, but he’s semi-reopened his recruitment to take a visit to Arizona State. We’ll stay tuned leading up to Signing Day.
