BYU Sports: Cougars’ Top 10 moments of 2017
By Shaun Gordon
No. 1: Toppling the No. 1 team in the nation
It’s not often you turn a newspaper into a lie, but BYU men’s basketball did just that.
Before the BYU-Gonzaga game on Feb. 25, the Spokesman Review in Spokane printed 7,000 copies with a bold headline: “30-0.”
But those papers never saw circulation. No. 1 Gonzaga couldn’t quite finish that undefeated regular season, as the Cougars entered the Kennel and walked back out with a 79-71 win.
It’s arguably the biggest win in BYU men’s basketball history, taking down the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation, who happened to be undefeated.
And they just happened to make a March run all the way to the NCAA title game.
In a season that suffered from over-hype, this game gave Cougar fans a monumental win and remarkable memory.
What a year for BYU sports. Here’s hoping 2018 is even bigger and better for the Cougars.
