As the new year begins, our attention turns to the BYU basketball team. For the Cougars to make a run, they’ll need to adopt these three resolutions.
BYU basketball sits at 12-3 on the season. The losses have all come to NCAA Tournament teams and the Cougars are still looking like they’ll be on the bubble when March rolls around.
But in order to make a run in the West Coast Conference – or to make the Big Dance – the Cougars will need to improve in some areas.
Here are three BYU basketball New Year’s Resolutions.
No. 1: Get Zac Seljaas Right
Zac Seljaas was a revelation for BYU basketball as a freshman. He shot 50 percent from 3-point range as was a great complimentary player. Plus, his length made him a rangy and tough defender.
The defense is still there. But the 3-point shooting has taken a huge step back.
Through 15 games, Seljaas is shooting just 32.7 percent from deep. In fact, Seljaas is down in nearly every offensive statistical category.
He’s playing four more minutes per game, but is shooting worse from the field (49 percent to 46 percent), worse from 3-point range (50 percent to 33 percent) and has seen his points per game dip from 7.6 to 6.8.
BYU basketball has to find a way to heat him up, because he could be a crucial part of the lineup as the season rolls along.
