BYU football: Green Bay Packers sign WR Colby Pearson
Former BYU football wide receiver Colby Pearson got himself a new deal with the Green Bay Packers to kick off 2018. Here’s a look at the details.
BYU football’s Colby Pearson was a bit of a surprising signing after the NFL Draft last year. But the Green Bay Packers clearly saw something in the Cougar wide out, signing him to the practice squad.
He didn’t record a statistic during the 2017 NFL season, but now Pearson has a nice new contract to ring in the new year.
The Green Bay Packers announced on January 2 that they had signed Pearson to a contract. According to contract database website Spotrac.com, Pearson’s deal is for two years, for just over $1 million.
In 2019, the former BYU football wide receiver will make $480,000. In 2020, he’ll make $570,000. Then, in 2021, Pearson will be an exclusive right free agent, meaning the Packers could offer him a minimum contract to retain him.
While Pearson isn’t breaking the bank with his new contract, it’s great to see some BYU football alums make some NFL money.
Speaking of his time with the Cougars, Pearson apparently was largely underutilized.
As a senior in 2016, playing alongside Taysom Hill and Jamaal Williams in Ty Detmer’s pro-style offense, Pearson caught 38 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns. In his BYU football career (2013-16), Pearson had 76 receptions for 864 yards and eight scores.
Obviously, props to Pearson for earning this deal. But just think how cool it would be if Green Bay hadn’t made the ridiculous error of cutting Taysom Hill during the preseason. Granted, Hill’s presence likely means nothing for Pearson, but having a trio of former Cougars on the same roster – with two of them (more than likely) contributing in a big way – would have been extremely fun.
