Former BYU basketball point guard Kyle Collinsworth has been waived by the Dallas Mavericks, just a few days after being signed by the NBA squad.

BYU basketball’s Triple-Double King Kyle Collinsworth has been waived by the Dallas Mavericks. The former Cougar had signed a two-way deal with the Mavericks just a few days ago.

Waiving Collinsworth gave the Mavs a roster spot for former New Orleans Pelicans guard Jalen Jones, according to Yahoo Sports and Shams Charania.

Collinsworth played just four games with Dallas. He was averaging 5.8 minutes per night, but had played just one minute over the last nine games combined.

On the season, Collinsworth was averaging one point per game along with .5 assists and rebounds per night.

He certainly wasn’t lighting it up. However, he played pretty well during his NBA debut on December 20 against the Detroit Pistons.

In that game, the 6-foot-6 former BYU basketball star played 13 minutes. He also hit his first career shot (a 3-pointer, no less). It was all downhill from there for the Provo native.

At this point, it’s expected Collinsworth will be back with Dallas on a 10-day contract. The Mavericks have yet to confirm that though.

Hopefully that is the case and Collinsworth gets more run with the Mavericks. He had been playing so well in the G-League, so one would think he could have some role in the NBA – even if he’s mainly a bench warmer.

Still, if that doesn’t work out for him, Collinsworth might be able to follow Jimmer Fredette’s footsteps in China. Collinsworth probably wouldn’t be the sensation that Jimmer is (because Jimmer pulls up from 30-feet every other possession), but he could tear up the CBA.

With his skill set, he may average a triple-double over there. Fitting for the NCAA’s all-time triple-double leader.
