BYU basketball will host the Houston Cougars during the 2018-19 season, according to Jon Rothstein.

There’s another team of Cougars coming to Provo next season.

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS, BYU basketball has scheduled at least one game with the Houston Ciougars.  It will take place this upcoming season at the Marriott Center, according to Rothstein’s tweet:

There are no details available yet, as far as when the game will take place or if it’s part of a larger series between the two teams.

This is a game that will have special significance for BYU Head Coach Dave Rose. Rose played for Houston as a part of the Cougars’ Phi Slamma Jamma team with Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.

Rose played at Houston from 1980-83, serving as a co-captain in his senior season. That year, the Cougars earned a No. 1 national ranking and reached the NCAA title game, falling to NC State in one of the most memorable games in college basketball history.

This will be the second time that Rose and BYU have faced his alma mater. The first time came in the 2006 NIT first round, when BYU lost in Houston 77-67.

Overall, the two teams have met six times. Houston has claimed four of those six wins.

Houston had a strong season in 2017-18. They reached the NCAA Tournament and won their first matchup against San Diego State 67-65. After a buzzer-beater loss to Michigan in the Round of 32, the Cougars finished the season with a 27-8 record.

Houston loses four players to graduation, including leading-scorer Rob Gray, but most of their production will return. They’ll also add Nate Hinton, a four-star guard out of North Carolina.

This game with Houston seems to reflect the added emphasis that BYU will place on scheduling high-quality non-conference opponents. Dave Rose spoke about that added emphasis earlier this month:

While news of individual games like this may trickle in over the next couple of months, expect to see the entire non-conference schedule released sometime in July.
