After the departure of BYU basketball assistant coach Heath Schroyer, Dave Rose has announced his replacement: Lee Cummard.

Dave Rose has found his replacement for Heath Schroyer, and he didn’t have to look very far.

On Wednesday, Rose announced the hiring of Lee Cummard as an assistant coach. He’ll fill the spot vacated when Schroyer took the head coaching position at McNese St.

Cummard has been a graduate assistant with the Cougars since 2016, and this will be his first opportunity as a full-fledged assistant.

BYU fans remember Cummard as an All-MWC wing who led the Cougars to three straight conference titles. He also earned AP All-America Honorable Mention honors in 2008.

His name is scattered all over BYU’s career records. He’s Top-20 in eleven different categories, including points, rebounds, and assists.

After graduating in 2009, Cummard spent one year in the NBA D-League with the Utah Flash before heading overseas. He spent his first three years playing in France and Japan before finding a home for his final three years as a player in Belgium.

Dave Rose has replaced one of the most experienced coaches in the country with one of the least. Schroyer came to BYU last season after 21 years as either a head coach or assistant coach. That included four years at BYU previously under Steve Cleveland.

Shroyer played a large role in the changes the Cougars made last season on both sides of the basketball, especially on defense.

Cummard, on the other hand, will enter next season as a first-time assistant, and it remains to be seen what he’ll bring to the table, and what responsibilities he’ll take on.

Time will tell if this hire turns out well for the Cougars.
