BYU Football: Six Cougars that could hear their names called in the NFL Draft
By Shaun Gordon
A BYU player has been selected in four of the last five NFL Drafts. At least one Cougar should hear his name called this weekend, but up to six have a shot.
It’s that time of the year again.
The Super Bowl was more than two months ago. The NFL Scouting Combine gave football fans a little taste of football during the offseason.
But this is the big one. The NFL Draft is the biggest football event that’s not actually a football game. It’s become a three-day festival meant to tide fans over until there are games again in August.
For NFL fans, it’s an opportunity to see who their favorite team will draft to help either start winning or keep winning.
For college football fans, it’s an opportunity to see where the players of their favorite team will begin the next chapter of their careers.
How many BYU fans became Packers fans this past year? Be honest.

This year, the Cougars will likely see anywhere from one to six former players selected at various stages of the draft. All six, and maybe a few more, should find their way onto a team, at least for a training camp invite.
Will all six hear their names called this weekend? Not likely.
But a few might, so lets break down the six players into three categories:
- Lock – A player who’s a near-guarantee to be picked sometime during the weekend.
- Hopeful – A player who has generated significant buzz as a late-round pick.
- Long Shots – Those who have created a little buzz, but not enough to expect a pick.
The Lock
Fred Warner
The star linebacker has been all over the place in mock drafts, but he’s been there in nearly all of them. He’s been predicted as high as a second-round pick, but most have him somewhere within rounds 3-5.
His name almost certainly won’t be called on Thursday, but there’s a chance he could know his next destination on Friday night. Barring a surprise, though, he’ll hear his name by sometime early Saturday.
