BYU Basketball announced another addition to their upcoming non-conference schedules – a home-and-home series with San Diego State.

Two old conference foes will square off again over the next two years. BYU basketball announced that they’ve scheduled a home-and-home series with San Diego State:

This upcoming season, the Cougars will travel to San Diego, taking on the Aztecs at Viejas Arena on December 22nd.  In 2019, San Diego State will return to the Marriott Center on November 9th.

This year’s game will be the first matchup between the two teams since the 2014 Maui Invitational. The Aztecs won that one in double overtime 92-87.

Before that, the two teams hadn’t squared off since 2010-11, BYU’s last year in the Mountain West Conference. That’s also the year that both teams spent most of the season in the nation’s Top 10.

The Cougars were led by Jimmer Fredette, while the Aztecs were led by Kawhi Leonard. BYU took both games in the regular season, each by 13 points. San Diego State got revenge in the MWC Tournament, beating BYU 72-54 in the championship game. Both teams made Sweet Sixteen runs in the NCAA Tournament that year.

Overall, the Cougars and Aztecs have met 72 times. BYU won 48 of those, while San Diego State won 24.

This is the fourth scheduling announcement in the last week for BYU Basketball. The 2018-19 non-conference schedule is starting to take shape, with nine games scheduled so far. Those games are:

  • Houston
  • at San Diego State
  • vs. UNLV (T-Mobile Arena is Las Vegas)
  • at Mississippi State
  • at Weber State
  • Utah State
  • vs. Utah (Vivint Smarthome Arena in Salt Lake City)
  • at Illinois State
  • Utah Valley

With the two-game reduction in the WCC schedule starting this year, the non-conference slate will likely consist of 15 games. The remaining six will be finalized sometime between now and July.
