BYU Basketball: No NBA Combine invite for Yoeli Childs
By Shaun Gordon
BYU basketball’s Yoeli Childs declared for the NBA Draft, but he hasn’t been invited to the Draft Combine, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS.
News of who’s invited to the NBA Draft Combine has been trickling in over the past couple of days, and it looks like BYU basketball’s Yoeli Childs didn’t get an invite.
This news comes from Jon Rothstein of CBS, the same writer who’s reported on three separate non-conference games that the Cougars will play next season.
Today he appeared on BYU Sports Nation, where he confirmed that Childs won’t be one of the players participating in the combine:
Childs announced his draft eligibility last month. Like Eric Mika last year, Childs can decide to remove his name from the draft and return to BYU. He’ll have to make that decision by June 11th.
Last year, Mika was invited to the combine, and later opted to keep his name in the draft. He wasn’t drafted, and headed to Europe to play professionally.
The lack of an invite doesn’t necessarily mean that Childs will return to the Cougars. He’ll have a chance to workout with individual teams leading up to the draft, and his performance and reception there will likely play the biggest factor in his decision.
As a Sophomore, Childs averaged 17.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He served as BYU’s primary post weapon on offense and contributed more than 2 blocks per game on defense.
Childs and Elijah Bryant carried the bulk of the Cougars’ production. With Bryant leaving early to play professionally, losing Childs as well would be a major setback for BYU basketball.
Nick Emery’s return will help replace a good part of Bryant’s production. However, there’s no immediately available option to replace Childs’ production if he remains in the draft.
June 11th won’t just be a big day for Yoeli’s future, it’ll also be a big day for BYU basketball’s future.
