BYU football is extending their series against in-state foe Utah State through 2022, completing the FBS portion of the Cougars’ 2021 schedule.

BYU football will be playing in-state opponent Utah State for at least the next five years.

According to Brett McMurphy, the Cougars and Aggies have agreed to extend the series for two more games, tacking on 2021 and 2022:

Following the home-and-home pattern that’s already been set, the Cougars will travel to Logan in 2021, with the Aggies invading Provo in 2022.

The Utah State matchup is BYU’s longest currently running series. The two teams have met every year since 2008, and the Cougars lead the all-time series 47-36-3.

Last season, the Cougars lost to the Aggies in Logan 40-24. With Tanner Mangum injured, Beau Hoge got the start and helped the Cougars jump out to a 21-14 lead before going down with injury himself. Koy Detmer took over at quarterback, and the Cougar offense stalled as the Aggies pulled ahead and earned the 16-point win.

This year, the two teams will square off on Friday, October 5th in LaVell Edwards Stadium. That game is one of the Cougars’ five opportunities in 2018 to get revenge for losses last year.

The scheduling extension also effectively completes the 2021 schedule for BYU. They’ve now got 11 games scheduled that season, and they’ll likely schedule an FCS team as the 12th game.

Right now, the 2021 schedule looks like this:

Home Games

  • Utah
  • Arizona State
  • South Florida
  • Boise State
  • Virginia

Road Games

  • USC
  • Washington State
  • Baylor
  • Utah State
  • Georgia Southern

Neutral Site

  • Arizona (Las Vegas)

Strangely enough, the Cougars have completed their 2021 schedule before getting their 2020 schedule done. BYU currently has only 10 games scheduled in 2020, so they’ll look to schedule at least one more FBS opponent for that season, likely at home.
