BYU Softball has won nine straight conference championships in four different conferences. A tenth title in a row comes down to three huge games this weekend.

A nine-year streak all boils down to one weekend for BYU Softball.

The Cougars host Loyola Marymount in the regular season’s final series, and the conference championship is on the line.

Both teams sit atop the West Coast Conference standings at 11-1, so whoever wins the three-game series this weekend will walk away with the title.

The two squads will face off in a doubleheader on Friday evening, followed by a Saturday afternoon finale that may serve as the rubber match to decide a champion.

Extending the Streak

For BYU, there’s a nine-year conference title streak on the line. The Cougars have won their conference every year since 2009, and two wins this weekend would extend that streak into double-digits.

Perhaps more impressive for the Cougars is the fact that they’ve won those nine straight conference championships in four different conferences. Their titles from 2009-11 came in the Mountain West Conference, then they won the Western Athletic Conference in 2012. BYU spent another single year in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, winning that title in 2013.

Since then, the Cougars have found a home in the WCC, where they’ve won the league for four straight years.

A conference title this year would also ensure that an even longer streak remains intact for BYU. The Cougars have appeared in 13 straight NCAA Tournaments, and the title would earn them a 14th straight trip to regionals. Since there’s no conference tournament in softball, whoever wins the regular season title earns that automatic spot.

If BYU doesn’t earn the automatic bid, they’ll be sweating bullets this Sunday when the selections are announced. The Cougars sit at 33-20 overall, which puts them in the discussion for an automatic berth, but not in a stable position for one.

It’s been a rollercoaster season for BYU. They started the season with a 4-9 record, and sat at 17-18 when March ended. They’ve caught fire since, winning sixteen out of their last eighteen games.

That streak has them on the brink of another conference title. Now they have to finish the final weekend strong.
