Fisburn’s dominant round moves BYU Men’s Golf into fourth place

A six-under second round from Patrick Fishburn has BYU Men’s Golf in a tie for fourth at the NCAA Norman Regional. They need a Top 5 finish to make the NCAA Championships.
Patrick Fishburn must like Tuesdays, especially Tuesdays in Oklahoma.
After shooting one-under par during Monday’s opening round of the NCAA Norman Regional, he followed it up with a six-under second round on Tuesday.
His second round dominance moves him into second place individually, just one stroke behind leader Blaine Hale of Oklahoma.
More importantly, his strong play helped the Cougars shoot up the leaderboard from a tie for ninth into a tie for fourth.
As a team, the Cougars shot ten-under par, the second-best score of any team in the Norman Regional. Only fellow WCC member Pepperdine (-14) shot better.
With five BYU golfers competing, four of their scores count for each round. The five Cougars shot:
- Patrick Fishburn (-6)
- Rhett Rasmussen (-4)
- Peter Kuest (-2)
- Spencer Dunaway (+2)
- C.J. Lee (+3)
The jump up the leaderboard puts the Cougars in qualifying position for the NCAA Championships. The five best-scoring teams advance, and right now that includes BYU.
Anything can happen in the final round though, so the Cougars will need to shoot well on Wednesday to secure that Top 5 position.
The top individual golfer who’s not part of a qualifying team will also advance to the NCAA Championships. Right now that’s Fishburn. His seven-under is four strokes better than the next golfer who’s not part of a Top 5 team (Virginia’s Ashton Poole at three-under).

Barring a bad final round, Fishburn is in position to qualify for the championships whether the Cougars qualify as a team or not.
But it’s a guarantee he’d rather see BYU move on as a team.
