Rose Huang sits in the Top 5 of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships, one of only ten golfers who shot under par after day one.

BYU Women’s Golf has one representative at the NCAA Championships, and she’s doing the Cougars proud so far.

Rose Huang shot two-under par in the first round of the championships, putting her in a tie for fourth place. Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest pulled ahead of the individual leaderboard at seven-under.

It was a challenging round for the entire field. Only 10 out of the 132 competitors shot under par on Friday, and no team managed to shoot under par as a whole. Southern California leads the team competition at three-over.

The NCAA Championships last four rounds, with each golfer playing one round per day from Friday to Monday.

Except for Rose Huang.

Because of BYU’s policy against Sunday play, Huang shot her third round on Thursday, before shooting her first round on Friday. In that Thursday round she shot two-over par.

It’s not quite as confusing as it sounds. That two-over score will be added to her total score on Sunday, evening her up with the rest of the golfers.

So while all the other golfers still have three rounds left to play, Huang is halfway through her 72 holes in the tournament.

Both the men’s and women’s championships are held this year at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Oklahoma State is the host of this year’s events.

Huang qualified for the championships individually out of the Austin Regionals, even though the BYU team failed to advance as a whole.

With the BYU Men’s Golf team qualifying for the men’s championships, they’ll be competing right on the heels of Huang’s finish. She’ll shoot her final round on Monday, and the men will shoot their practice rounds on Tuesday.

Huang tees off at 7:25am MDT for Saturday’s second round, and you can follow her progress here.
