The NCAA Track and Field West Preliminaries start today in Sacramento. 52 Cougars have a shot to qualify for the NCAA Championships early next month.

BYU Track and Field has 52 athletes in Sacramento this weekend to compete in the NCAA West Preliminaries. In total, the Cougars will have 58 opportunities to advance to the NCAA Championships.

Starting today and running through Saturday, the top 12 competitors in each event will qualify for the NCAA Championships, which are held June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon.

55 events will take place over then next three days, and BYU will have at least once athlete in nearly half of them. Looking at the number of overall entries, the Cougars have the second most men (34) and seventh most women (24) competing this weekend.

With each event, all of the athletes who qualified for the prelims are seeded based on their performance this season. Those seeded in the Top 12 are the ones expected to advance to the championships.

If the seeds were to hold true, 20 Cougars would advance to Eugene. Seven BYU women and thirteen BYU men earned Top 12 seeds entering the weekend.

The BYU men enter the prelims as the No. 7 team in the nation. They boast six athletes who have earned a Top 5 seed in at least one event.

Here are the Cougar Athletes who will compete this weekend:

The last men’s team athlete to win a National Championship was Kyle Perry, who took home the tile in both the 3000-meter and Steeplechase events.

On the Women’s side, Nachelle Mackie was the last BYU National Champion, winning the 800-meters in 2012.

There are multiple athletes, both on the men’s and women’s side, who can snap those droughts and bring home a championship for BYU.

They’ve got to get through the prelims first, though.
