BYU Golf: It’s the men’s turn at the NCAA Championships
By Shaun Gordon
Starting today, the BYU Men’s Golf Team competes in the NCAA Championships. They’ll look to keep their momentum going after a strong showing at regionals.
College students have overrun the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
First, 132 women teed off in the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships. Now that the team competition for the women has finished, 156 men will tackle the same course this weekend.
For BYU, the women’s team didn’t qualify for the championships, but Rose Huang did individually and earned a Top 25 national finish.
Now she’ll pass the torch – and some tips and strategies – on to the BYU Men’s Golf team.
The men’s team qualified for the championships after a second-place finish in the Norman Regional last week. The Cougars shot back-to-back ten-under par rounds to earn their spot in this week’s tournament.
BYU will compete as a team, but each golfer is also competing for the individual title as well. Patrick Fishburn likely has the Cougars’ best shot at that title. He took second in the regional, shooting ten-under through his three rounds. That’s momentum that he’ll hope to carry into this week’s tournament.
Every team but BYU will have a practice round Thursday before their first round on Friday. The Cougars, however, already played their practice round on Wednesday. They’ll play for keeps on Thursday, shooting their third round.
The rest of the teams play the third round on Sunday, but with BYU’s Sunday play policy, their Thursday score will be added in before Monday.
If BYU is in the Top 15 after three rounds, they’ll play again on Monday, and a Top 8 finish after that qualifies the Cougars for match play on Tuesday and Wednesday.
