After qualifying individually for the fourth round of the NCAA Championships, Patrick Fisburn earned a Top 35 finish in his final collegiate tournament.

Patrick Fishburn finished his final collegiate tournament with a Top 35 national finish.

After four rounds of competition, Fishburn finished five-over par, good for sole possession of 35th place.

It was a rollercoaster weekend for Fishburn and the entire Cougar team. Because of BYU’s Sunday play policy, the Cougars shot their third round on Thursday while the rest of the teams played that round on Sunday.

That Thursday round proved costly for BYU. The Cougars played through bad weather, finishing the round at 24-over. With a three-round score of 33-over, BYU didn’t make the Top 15 and advance to Monday.

Fishburn managed to advance to Monday’s fourth round individually. Even with a six-over Thursday round, he shot one-over in total through 54 holes.

During Monday’s fourth round, Fishburn shot well in 17 of his 18 holes. On the ninth hole, though, a par five, he quintuple bogeyed, dropping him to four-over for the round. That’s where he finished after shooting even par on the back nine.

If it wasn’t for that disastrous ninth hole on Monday, Fishburn would have earned a Top 15 finish.

Even though the Cougars failed to advance to the fourth round as a team, this was a step in the right direction for BYU. It’s the first time they qualified for the NCAA Championships as a team since 2006, and they’ll look to build on that success going forward.

Fortunately, BYU brings back three of the five golfers who competed in the championships. They’ll lose Fisburn and CJ Lee to graduation, but bring back Rhett Rasmussen, Peter Kuest, and Spencer Dunaway.

Three other Cougars competed as freshmen during the season, and they’ll look to step in and fill the spots left by the departing seniors. Those three are Andrew Chin, Kelton Hirsch, and Chad Hardy.

Final Scores

Patrick Fishburn = +5

Rhett Rasmussen = +6

CJ Lee = +11

Peter Kuest = +15

Spencer Dunaway = +30
