Team Fredette has a new player for The Basketball Tournament this summer. Jimmer will play for the team he created, looking to return to the NBA.

Jimmer Fredette will finally play for the team that bears his name.

Fredette announced that he’ll play in The Basketball Tournament this summer for Team Fredette. TBT is a 72-team tournament with a $2 million purse for the winner that will take place from June 29 to August 3.

Last year, Jimmer created Team Fredette but didn’t play, instead serving as one of the coaches. This year is different, and he has a reason to get on the court.

The NBA.

In an interview with ESPN, Fredette said that he’s hoping to use the tournament to get another look from NBA teams:

"“I would always love to get another chance in the NBA. I’ve gotten better in China and improved every year…You hope somebody takes notice.”-Jimmer Fredette"

Jimmer’s first foray into the NBA didn’t go as planned. After going to the Sacramento Kings as the No. 10 pick in 2011, he spent five years on four different teams, trying to find a good fit. Over five seasons, Fredette averaged six points per game on 41% shooting, including 38% shooting from three-point range.

He’s found a home on the other side of the world, though, becoming a star in China. During the last two years in the Chinese Basketball Association, Fredette is averaging 37 points and 5 assists per game. In 2016-17 he earned the International MVP award for the league.

He’s become a celebrity of sorts, even earning a nickname, translated to english as “The Lonely Master.”

Can Jimmer use what he’s learned to find a permanent home back in the NBA? He thinks so, and he’s got a chance to show himself off in this summer’s tournament.

Team Fredette will compete in the Midwest Region. Seeding hasn’t been determined yet, nor has the complete schedule, but the Midwest Regionals run from July 20-22 in Columbus Ohio.

Jimmer won’t be the only familiar face for BYU fans on Team Fredette. Former Cougar Charles Abouo will also play, and Jimmer’s brother TJ will serve as an assistant coach.

Last season, Team Fredette drew a No. 10 seed in the West Regional, and faced No. 7 Team Utah in the first round. Team Utah edged out the win 100-97 on a last-second three pointer.

Looks like they could have used Jimmer.
