The 2018 quarterback battle for BYU Football completely up for grabs. After a lot of studying and film watching, here is a way-too-early quarterback depth chart.

There have been some really interesting quarterback battles for BYU Football in the last decade. In 2011 it was Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps. In 2016 it was Taysom Hill and Tanner Mangum. Besides those, though, every season has had a pretty clear starting quarterback.

2018 is completely different.

This upcoming season realistically could see the starting quarterback go to any of five quarterbacks: Tanner Mangum, Beau Hoge, Joe Critchlow, Zach Wilson and a dark horse candidate in Baylor Romney.

Lets look at all nine potential quarterbacks that are currently on the roster:

Not Gonna Happen

9. Austin Kafentzis

Austin Kafentzis is listed as a defensive back, taking a step further back from the quarterback position. He will not be the starting quarterback, but there could still be a very slight chance of him taking a few snaps in the wildcat formation. That’s only if they decide to not burn a redshirt on one of the younger running quarterbacks and if Beau Hoge goes down with injury. That would leave Tanner Mangum and Joe Critchlow, two players not known for their running.

8. Stacy Connor

Statistically, Connor should be higher than number nine on this list, however he will likely find himself redshirting this season. In the spring game, he didn ‘t perform very well, showing that he still has a lot of improving to do. Connor could be a very good quarterback in the future, but 2018 is not the season.

7. Hayden Griffitts

Hayden Griffitts has already used up his redshirt, which is the main reason why he’s ahead of Stacy Connor. Griffitts very easily could find himself playing a different position. There seem to be a lot of different future possibilities at starting quarterback and not very many of them have Hayden Griffitts’ name on them.
