Special Teams

The Golden Bears will miss their kicker, Matt Anderson, who set the career scoring record for Call. Chris Landgrebe (Fr.) and Gabe Siemieniec (So.) will compete to replace him.

Cal’s 2017 punter, Dylan Klumph, transferred to Arizona, another BYU opponent. He’ll likely be replaced by Steven Coutts (Jr.).

Outlook

The Golden Bears bring back a majority of their starters, so their 2018 season will hinge on how well their players develop and improve from last year to this. The offense will benefit from the stability, but there’s a lot of room to grow, especially along the offensive line. Keep an eye on the quarterback battle between Bowers and McIlwain.

The defense has to avoid taking a step backwards from 2017. Their pass defense should improve, but a lot of new faces along the front seven still leave a lot of question marks.

Just like BYU, Cal has a difficult schedule. It’s very possible that the Golden Bears could be better than last year but finish with a worse record.

The game between the Cougars and Golden Bears may decide bowl eligibility for both teams.

  • The Cougars won the last game in 2014. The Cougars edged the Golden Bears 42-35 in Berkeley, CA.
