BYU Men’s Volleyball announced that Micah Naone will fill one of the Cougar’s two open assistant coaching positions for 2019.

One of BYU Men’s Volleyball’s two open assistant coaching spots is now filled.

On Wednesday, Head Coach Shawn Olmstead announced that Micah Naone will serve as a full-time assistant coach. He spent last season as a volunteer coach for the Cougars.

BYU lost both assistant coaches from last season. One assistant, Jaylen Reyes, has moved on to become an assistant for Nebraska’s powerhouse women’s team. The other, Luka Slabe, will fill a spot on the USA Volleyball Women’s National Team staff.

Naone is from Hawaii, where he played with Jaylen Reyes at Kamehameha High School.  He then attended the University of Hawaii West Oahu, where he studied and graduated with a business management degree.

While going to school, he helped coach various club and high school teams. Once he moved to Utah, he began coaching at BYU’s volleyball camps before becoming a volunteer coach for the men’s team.

He’ll be learning on the job to a certain degree, since this is his first full-time coaching position. For example, he’ll have a hand in recruiting, which he couldn’t do as a volunteer last season.

2019 will be a year of transition for the Cougars. Not only will BYU have two new assistant coaches, but they’ll also lose four key seniors. Three of those, Brenden Sander, Price Jarman, and Leo Durkin, earned All-American honors last season.

This will also be the first time since 2010 that the Cougars won’t have a Sander on the roster. Between Taylor and Brenden, BYU has enjoyed eight straight years of high-level play.

The cupboard isn’t bare, though. The Cougars have six players returning who played at least half of BYU’s sets last season, led by All-American freshman Gabi Garcia Fernandez.

Next season will be a season of transition, but it shouldn’t be a major rebuilding year.
