Lawless Republic’s Scouting the Schedule series continues with BYU Football’s fourth game of the 2018 season, FCS opponent McNeese State.

After three straight games against Power Five opponents to start 2018, BYU Football will finally get a bit of a breather in their fourth game.

The Cougars will welcome the McNeese State Cowboys, an FCS team, to LaVell Edwards Stadium.

This isn’t a game to take lightly though, as the Cowboys are one of the premier FCS programs in the country. They took down FBS opponent South Florida in 2013, then almost knocked off Nebraska in 2014.

McNeese State brings back a potent offense, and while their defense has some gaps to fill, especially up front, they were one of the stingiest in the FCS last season.

If BYU doesn’t watch out, this could be a trap game before taking on a Top 10 Washington team the following week.

Last Season

Last year, the Cowboys finished 9-2, with a 7-2 record in the Southland conference. They finished third in the Southland, but were the only 9-win team to be left out of the NCAA Division I Football Championship.

That likely came as a result of their late season loss to Southland Champ Central Arkansas. The Bears completely demolished the Cowboys 47-17, outscoring them 38-7 in the final three quarters.

Offseason

Coaching changes are frequent in the FCS, but the core of the Cowboy coaching staff returns for 2018. Head Coach Lance Guidry also serves as the Defensive Coordinator, and Offensive Coordinator Landon Hoefer returns as well.

The Cowboys did lose a good chuck of their starters to graduation, especially on the defensive end. They’ve got enough talent and experience, though, to enter 2018 as a Southland contender and probable playoff team.
