Three BYU golfers have qualified for the US Amateur Championship next month – Spencer Dunaway, Peter Kuest, and Rhett Rasmussen.

The spring and summer of elite play for BYU Men’s Golf has continued, even with the college season over.

This week, three Cougar golfers qualified for next month’s US Amateur Championship, the biggest amateur tournament in the nation.

Rhett Rasmussen automatically qualified for the championship after qualifying for last month’s US Open. He finished that major at 14-over, the seventh best score for an amateur golfer in the tournament.

All of the amateurs that qualified for the US Open automatically receive spots in the US Amateur, so his ticked has been punched for a while.

Two other BYU golfers, though, took a different route to qualification. Both competed in qualifying events this week, and both earned their spots with stellar play.

Peter Kuest played in the Fresno Sectional Qualifier at Sunnyside Country Club. A native of the area, he shot a stellar 8-under par, finishing in a tie for first with Danny Paniccia. He shot a 66 in the first round and a 70 in the second.

Spencer Dunaway, a Hawaii native, competed in the Hawaii Sectional Qualifier at the Kapolei Golf Club. He finished at 4-under, winning the qualifier outright and earning a spot in the championship.

The US Amateur Championship will run from August 13-19. The first two days will feature stroke play at Spyglass Hill Golf Course in Pebble Beach, California.

The top 64 players after stroke play will advance to the match-play tournament, which will move to the prestigious Pebble Beach Golf Links.

For all three Cougars, this is a great experience and a learning opportunity. Dunaway will return to BYU as a senior leader next season, and both Kuest and Rasmussen will be juniors.

They’ll look to guide the Cougars to the top of the West Coast Conference, and earn a return trip to the NCAA Championships.
