BYU Football: Scouting the Schedule – Utah State
By Shaun Gordon
The Defense
Defensive Line
Just like the offensive line, the Aggies bring back their entire starting defensive line as well. There’s plenty of depth at the position too.
Adewale Adeoye (Sr.) and Devon Anderson (Jr.) will start at the ends, with Christopher ‘Unga (Jr.) manning the middle.
Jacoby Wildman (Jr.), Fua Leilua (Jr.), and Caden Anderson (So.) will provide experience in the two-deep, and Wildman led all defensive linemen in tackles in 2017.
Linebacker
Utah State lost both outside linebackers to graduation, but both Suli Tamaivena (Sr.) and Chase Christiansen (Sr.) are back to man the inside. Tamaivena led the Aggies with 111 tackles last year.
Tipa Galeai (Jr.) is a transfer from TCU who will likely land one of the outside linebacker spots, and Jontrell Rocquemore (Sr.) has seen three years of action for the Aggies, and he’ll be ready to claim the other starting position.
The second unit has plenty of game experience as well, with Maika Magalei (So.) and Baron Gajkowski (So.) on the outside and Mason Tobeck (Jr.) and David Woodward (So.) on the inside.
Defensive Back
Losing an All-American hurts the secondary, but the rest of last year’s starters return. Gaje Ferguson (Sr.) had 90 tackles in 2017 at strong safety, and Ja’Marcus Ingram (So.) split starting time with Dallin Leavitt last year. With Leavitt graduated, the spot is Ingram’s to lose.
Cameron Haney (Jr.) will have one starting cornerback spot, but there will be a battle to replace Jalen Davis between Deante Fortenberry (Sr.) and Andre Grayson (Fr.).
