The 2018-2019 BYU Basketball roster was recently released, and it’s missing one player who has contributed more than you may think.

With the 2018-19 BYU Basketball roster recently released on the Cougars’ website, Braiden Shaw’s name is conspicuously absent.

Over the past three seasons, Shaw hasn’t exactly been what you’d call a star player for the Cougars, but he also hasn’t seemed like a player that would be cut from the team, especially with players like Evan Troy and Taylor Maughan still on the roster.

There are many possibilities why Shaw may have left the program, such as school or continual injury issues, but no matter the reason, it appears he’s moved on.

Although there has been no official statement released by BYU, it looks like Shaw won’t be suiting up next season for the Cougars. There’s still a long way to go before the season starts, though, so that could still change.

If he is gone from BYU Basketball, he’ll be missed. Let’s look back at some of his best moments in his three seasons as a Cougar.

No. 3 – Free throws against Gonzaga

In 2016, BYU was down 32-30 to No. 25 Gonzaga with just over two minutes left in the first half. The Bulldogs then went on a quick 4-0 run and held a 36-30 lead and the momentum with only seconds left in the half.

Shaw entered the game and drew a foul. He knocked down both free throws, cutting the deficit to four going into the half.

He never entered the game again, but Shaw’s two points right before halftime shifted the momentum going into the second half, and they pulled off the 69-68 road upset over the Bulldogs.

No. 2 – Performance versus Portland

In 2017, BYU was coming off a tough loss to Saint Mary’s and looking for momentum to finish off the regular season. BYU traveled to Portland without Yoeli Childs.

Braiden Shaw got the start, and he didn’t disappoint. Shaw pulled down 11 rebounds, five of them on offense. He also added four points and two assists to help lead the Cougars to a 97-78 win over the Pilots.

No. 1 – Eight straight points versus Utah State

On the last day of November in 2016, Utah State and BYU were locked in a tight game towards the end of the first half. After trailing the Cougars by 12 points early in the match, the Aggies found themselves only down 29-25.

At that point, Shaw went on a personal run, scoring 8 straight points for the Cougars. It gave BYU momentum heading into halftime, and also increased the lead to six.  In that same time span, Shaw pulled down four defensive rebounds and didn’t allow any points in the paint

Although Shaw probably wouldn’t have been a major contributor in 2018-19, it is still sad to see the forward no longer on the roster after being a pretty dependable option when healthy.
