BYU Football: Adam Pulsipher named to Wuerffel Trophy watch list
By Shaun Gordon
Cougar linebacker Adam Pulsipher is on the Wuerffel Trophy watch list. He’s the fourth BYU Football player on a major award watch list so far.
A fourth BYU Football player finds himself in the running for a national award.
On Thursday, the All Sports Association released the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, and Cougar linebacker Adam Pulsipher is on that list.
The Wuerffel Trophy is given to the player that best combines athletics, community service, and academics. It’s unique among the major college football awards, as it’s one of the few that considers more than just on-field achievement.
In all, 106 players are on the watch list. That number will be pared down to a group of semifinalists on November 1st, with a smaller group of finalists released on November 19th. The winner will be announced on December 4th at a National Football Foundation press conference.
The winner will have to wait a while to get the award, though. It won’t be presented until the All Sports Association Award Banquet on February 15th of next year.
Pulsipher, a 6’6″ senior linebacker, has seen game action in each of his three previous years as a Cougar. He’s started a total of seven games over the last two years, playing in all but one contest over that span.
As a sophomore in 2016, Pulsipher finished the season with 16 total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. He upped that production as a junior, finishing last season with 54 tackles and one tackle for loss, adding a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
As a senior he’ll be a part of a deep middle linebacker position and be fighting for playing time with Butch Pau’u, Matt Hadley, and Christian Folu. With his experience, he’ll certainly see a good amount of playing time, even if he doesn’t get the starting nod.
Off the field, Pulsipher earned his Bachelor’s degree more than a year ago, and he’s entering his second year of the BYU MBA program.
He joins Squally Canada (Doak Walker Award), Matt Bushman (Mackey Award), and Corbin Kaufusi (Bronko Nagurski Award) as the fourth Cougar to earn a spot on a major award watch list.
