BYU Football: Roster changes highlighted as fall camp begins
By Shaun Gordon
With the start of fall camp comes an updated roster. For BYU Football, there are plenty of notable changes, including some big additions and omissions.
One of the most anticipated parts of the start of fall camp is an updated roster, and it was no different for BYU Football as they opened practices on Thursday.
There were a number of position changes, with some players listed in dual positions as they work to find the best fit before the season starts.
The online roster reflects most of these changes, but media members were given a copy of the roster that sheds even more light:
The roster also boasted some exciting new blood that are on the roster for the first time.
On the flip side, there are some notable names missing from the roster as camp kicks off.
Let’s take a look at all three areas:
Position Changes
The most notable position change is Beau Hoge. The junior quarterback is now listed at both quarterback and running back, and saw time at running back in practice. With that change, it looks like he’s fallen out of the starting quarterback race.
Another key switch is Zayne Anderson. The senior is moving from safety to linebacker, and is expected to start at Fred Warner’s old spot.
Two defensive players will get a shot at running back in camp. Seniors Matt Hadley and Tanner Jacobson have dual positions listed, with Hadley also at linebacker and Jacobson also at defensive back.
A few other changes:
- Junior Johnny Tapusoa is moving from linebacker to fullback.
- Sophomore Austin Whetzel is switching from defensive back to wide receiver.
- Freshman Max Tooley is now at linebacker rather than defensive back.
